5 Economics Aspects
5.1 Fisheries
The fisheries are primarily aimed to shrimp fishing for
what ships use trawling, where further includes all
kinds of marketable fish. In addition, they harvest
oysters, which live attached to the roots of red
mangrove (
Rhizophora mangle
L.). In Table 2, the
production in 2011 is segregate.

The main income of the Playa Florida population
come from these industrial fisheries that take place
outside the area of the village, so it is not a product of
wetland associated with that community. Fishermen
and people linked directly to this activity are well paid,
depending on the fulfillment of production and are the
highest income group in the community.
For this activity, Fishing Company has 23 fishing boat.
Moreover, artisanal fishing is limited to obtaining fish
using different gear as nets, hooks, etc., but in small
quantities, dedicated family consumption or marketing
on a small scale.
5.2 Recreation
Recreation is another important source of income for
the community. In addition to the houses of the
residents, there are some community's recreational
houses (like small motels) belonging to companies,
mainly from Florida and Cépedes cities and some of
the adjacent province of Ciego de Ávila. These houses
are facilitated to the workers of such entities during
the vacation period of July and August. Although most
of the incomes from this activity do not lead directly
to the economy of the community, some residents take
the opportunity to sell food and rent part of their
houses to vacationers, resulting in an income of
resident villagers.
5.3 Other economic activities associated with
community
Other activities, mainly in the area of services,
generate income to residents of the community. In that
case, it can be pointed services such as barbershop,
grocery store, pharmacy and cafeteria.
Coal production is carried out on a small scale is
rarely done, as the community has electricity and
cooking modules using electricity distributed by the
government.
Savannah is mainly dedicated to extensive cattle due
to the limited availability of natural food and the low
soil fertility, among other reasons.
The northeast of the study area has been dedicated to
rice production for several decades and it is one of the
main areas of this crop within the municipality.
Although production has been declining in recent
years, from 6 826 t in 2004 to 215.8 in 2008, from
2009 a recovery (564.4 t) is shown, which should
continue to increase (ONE, 2012).
5.4 Economic potential of the area in other lines
unexploited
In correspondence with the natural values of the
wetland, some elements can be exploited sustainably,
and these actions can generate jobs and income to the
community.
5.4.1 Bee Honey Production
Mangroves are well known for their contribution to
the production of bee honey. There are now available
many hectares of this vegetation and it will increase
once the water flow is restored through the road. In
addition, according to the inventory of flora, 17% of
all species, including savanna, are considered as
melliferous. This product is well paid in the
international market.
5.4.2 Birdwatching
The richness of birds of the area suggests developing
birdwathing, which is well paid by people who enjoy
this activity. Bird watching has been exploited some
times from the city of Florida located 40 km far away,
with good results, although the distance has negatively
conspired. However, recreational houses from
different companies could be exploited for this
purpose.
5.4.3 Use of medicinal mud
Although the implementation of this activity requires
chemical and pharmacological analysis, sludge
