to the rest of the south coast where dominate these
ecosystems.
The site is an important natural nursery place for fish
and shrimp larvae, it is used as a refuge for migratory
and resident birds, and it is threatened, as the rest of
the south coast by natural factors already exposed. For
this reason, negative actions performed by man can
enhance the impact of these natural factors.
3.12 Identify conflicts
- There is a perception of environmental problems in
the community but there are not actions to solve them.
- The ecological damage caused by shrimp fisheries
do not occur in the area of the community, but in grids
fishing intended for this purpose, far away from the
zone of influence of the community.
4 Social Aspects
4.1 Main features
The coastal community of Playa Florida occupies an
area of 4.2 km
2
, and now covers virtually the entire
available area of the sandy bar, so its extension is
growing at the expense of filling the sublittoral lagoon
immediately behind the bar occupied by the
community.
It counts with electricity through the electrical
national grid and a rural aqueduct water service,
which is supplied by groundwater pumping in areas of
the community and served once chlorinated.
From the point of view of government organization,
Playa Florida is a special district of the municipality
of Florida, given its characteristics of remoteness,
isolation and size.
Movements between the capital city of the
municipality of Floridar and the community have as a
means of transport a bus, although the vehicles used
by the fishing company to transport its workers is also
used.
4.2 Demography
The Playa Florida community is made up of two
groups on the basis of the law of homes; permanent
residents and non-permanent residents.
In terms of numbers, the total number of residents
reach 512 and they are the bulk of the labor force of
the main jobs, both in the fishing company (139 of
210 employees), as well as in some other services
such as school, pharmacy, cafeteria.
However, some workers of the fishing company,
33.8%, come from other towns, particularly from the
city of Florida, head of the municipality of the same
name.
4.3 Characteristics of the houses
The number of houses within the village is 307,
predominantly wooden buildings.
These houses include some with recreational purposes
that belong to several enterprises mainly of the
municipality, who use the beach during the summer
months and particularly during the school holidays in
July and August.
4.4 Main Services; School and Medical
There is a school providing education up to sixth
grade to the children from the community and nearby
villages such as Los Guines. They have seven teachers
and two teaching assistants, both living in the
community, ensuring the link student-teacher.
There are a doctor's family and a medical Post. They
have a pharmacy in which, as far, only the community
members can buy, which guarantee the supply of
medical products to the people in such isolated
community.
4.5 Community organizations
At present, there are several people organizations at
the community. There is also a house of worship of
the Evangelical League where believers gather Friday
to Sunday.
4.6 Identify conflicts
- The growth of the population is not in
correspondence with the space to grow in houses.
- Public services are deficient despite unemployed
people.
- The sale of products to the population does not
satisfy the needs of the population if it considers the
income linked to fishing activities.
- Despite high vulnerability of the community to
flooding from storm surges there is not on the minds
of residents to move the community to safer areas.
