Such an integrated educational model can better prepare practitioners to apply both TCM and modern nutritional science in clinical settings, thereby improving patient outcomes (Zhou et al., 2023). 4.3 Application fields In the field of cardiovascular diseases, TCM has shown promise due to its rich variety of antioxidant components, which can help manage oxidative stress-a key factor in the development of these diseases. Integrating TCM's holistic approach with modern nutritional science can lead to more effective prevention and treatment strategies for cardiovascular diseases (Jiang et al., 2022). For example, clinical trials and basic research on TCM have led to the development of innovative research techniques that can be integrated into existing biomedical models, thereby enhancing their applicability and effectiveness (Jiang et al., 2022). Another promising application field is in the supportive care of cancer patients. TCM therapies have been found to be effective in managing symptoms and improving the quality of life for cancer patients. By integrating TCM with conventional Western medicine, deficiencies in the current biomedical model can be supplemented, leading to a more comprehensive and effective approach to cancer care (Wong et al., 2001). This integrative model not only supports the development of science-based holistic medicine but also opens new avenues for research and clinical practice (Wong et al., 2001). 5 Practical Applications in Health Management 5.1 Chronic disease management Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a holistic approach to managing chronic diseases by viewing the patient as a whole system rather than focusing on isolated symptoms. This perspective aligns well with modern network pharmacology, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of biological systems. For instance, TCM's use of herbal formulae, such as Qing-Luo-Yin and the Liu-Wei-Di-Huang pill, has shown promise in treating complex diseases like cancer by targeting multiple pathways simultaneously (Li and Zhang, 2013). This multi-target approach can be particularly effective in chronic disease management, where the interplay of various biological factors often complicates treatment. Moreover, the integration of TCM with modern technologies, such as Intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine (ITCM), can further enhance chronic disease management. ITCM combines TCM principles with artificial intelligence to improve the precision and efficiency of treatments. This interdisciplinary approach not only supports the holistic philosophy of TCM but also addresses the need for personalized medicine, which is crucial for managing chronic conditions effectively (Tian et al., 2023). 5.2 Management of suboptimal health states Suboptimal health states, often characterized by fatigue, stress, and minor ailments, can significantly impact quality of life. TCM offers unique strategies for managing these conditions through its focus on balance and harmony within the body. For example, TCM nutrition emphasizes the use of food as medicine, tailoring dietary recommendations based on individual syndromes and constitutions. This personalized approach can help restore balance and improve overall health (Zhao et al., 2020). Additionally, the role of micronutrients in managing suboptimal health states cannot be overlooked. Research has shown that multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) can reduce anemia and anxiety among school children in rural China, highlighting the importance of adequate nutrition in maintaining health (Zhang et al., 2013). Combining TCM's holistic dietary principles with modern nutritional science can offer a comprehensive strategy for managing suboptimal health states. 5.3 Health management for special populations Special populations, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with specific health conditions, require tailored health management strategies. TCM's constitution theory, which categorizes individuals based on their unique physical and psychological characteristics, can be particularly beneficial for these groups. By
